Dr. Martin Bergee from the University of Kansas initially believed that when you accounted for all of the demographic variables, the relationship between music and reading and math would be nonexistent. He was surprised when he found out he was wrong and music achievement does have a statistically significant relationship with both reading and math acheivement. The study is entitled, “Multilevel Models of the Relationship Between Music Achievement and Reading and Math Achievement,” and was published in the Journal of Research in Music Education.
